10 ways to have a better conversation

By Celeste Headlee | TED

  • Do not multitask: be in that moment, do not be half in and out, do not use your phone, and think about dinner if you want a break make an excuse and walk out from the conversation.
  • Do not pontificate: you must assume that you learn from every conversation. Some conversations can be boring, but still, there is something to learn for you. “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t”
  • Question and answers: remember 5Ws why, when, who were, and what. Ask questions that make sense and are related and make them think and answer such questions as "how it feels?" let them describe, and you will get a much more interesting response.
  • Go with the flow: when you listing to a conversation different stories and ideas will come to your mind that’s fine and what you should do is let them come and go start listing.
  • If you don’t know say that you don’t know: talk should not be cheap, be sure what you are saying is correct.
  • Don’t compair their experience with your experiences: personal experiences are different from each other if someone talks about the loss of a family member you do not talk about the time you lost your family member it's two different experiences. Conversations are not a promotional opportunity.
  • Do not repeat: sometimes to prove things we have to repeat things and don’t do that.
  • Stay out of the details: people don’t care about the dates and numbers that you struggling to come up with in your mind all they do care about is what you are like and what you are common at, forget the details explain things in simple.
  • Listening: it’s the most important thing to build a good coversation. If you keep talking that means you not listening and that will distract, we can listen to 500 words for a minute.
  • Be brief: go out talk to people and listen to people And, most importantly, be prepared to be amazed.
